This report counts documents of the following type(s):
Design patents (i.e., patents for ornamental designs for articles of manufacture)
granted by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office during the period 01/01/1977 - 12/31/2014. These profiled documents hereafter will be referred to as "patents".

This report displays the number of U.S. patent grants, as distributed by ownership location (state/territory and country) and by calendar year of grant.

A patent's ownership location is determined by the location of the first-named assigned owner listed on the patent grant. If no assigned owner is listed on the patent, ownership is assumed to be retained by the inventor(s) and the ownership location is determined by the residence of the first-named inventor.

Please note that for some patents, when the specific regional location of the owner is not listed, ownership location has been placed in a broader "U.S.,Unspecified Region" or "Unknown Foreign Country" regional category.

Regional names that appear in this report do not imply any expression of opinion by USPTO about the preferred name or the legal status of any country or territory, or of its authorities.

The source of the data used for this report is the TAF database maintained by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.
