AS A RESULT OF REEXAMINATION, IT HAS BEEN DETERMINED THAT:
Claims 1-2 are cancelled.
New claims 3-9 are added and determined to be patentable.
1. A picture coding method for dividing, into blocks, a current picture to be coded, selecting a reference picture from among reference pictures on a block basis, describing information which identifies the selected reference picture, and performing predictive coding on the block, said method comprising:
selecting, using a selection unit, for coding a plural-block image unit made up of a plurality of blocks, a common reference picture to be commonly referred to, from among plural reference pictures, the common reference picture being only one reference picture that is selected from among the plural reference pictures and is assigned commonly to each of the plurality of blocks of the plural-block image unit;
describing, using a common information description unit, common information which identifies the selected common reference picture, in a common information area for the plural-block image unit such that reference picture identification information for the selected common reference picture can be omitted for at least one of the plurality of blocks of the plural-block image unit, instead of describing, per block, reference picture identification information which identifies the selected common reference picture;
generating, using a predictive image generation unit, a predictive image of a current block to be coded included in the plural-block image unit, using the selected common reference picture; and
coding, using a coding unit, the current block using the predictive image.
[ 3. The picture coding method according to claim 1, further comprising:
selecting, for the current block of the plural-block image unit, another reference picture; and
describing, in a block-specific information area for the current block, block-specific reference picture identification information that identifies the selected other reference picture,
wherein the generating the predictive image of the current block comprises generating the predictive image of the current block using the selected common reference picture and the selected other reference picture.]
[ 4. The picture coding method according to claim 1, further comprising:
selecting, for coding the plural-block image unit, another common reference picture to be commonly referred to for the plurality of blocks and assigned commonly to each of the plurality of blocks of the plural-block image unit,
wherein the describing the common information which identifies the selected common reference picture comprises describing, in the common information area for the plural-block image unit, the common information which identifies the selected common reference picture, and another common information which identifies the selected other common reference picture, and
wherein the generating the predictive image of the current block comprises generating the predictive image of the current block using the selected common reference picture and the selected other common reference picture.]
[ 5. The picture coding method according to claim 4, wherein the common reference picture and the other common reference picture are different reference pictures.]
[ 6. The picture coding method according to claim 4, wherein the common reference picture and the other common reference picture both temporally precede the current picture in a display order.]
[ 7. The picture coding method according to claim 6, wherein the common reference picture and the other common reference picture are different reference pictures.]
[ 8. The picture coding method according to claim 1, further comprising:
for another plural-block image unit of the current picture, describing, per block of the other plural-block image unit, block-specific reference picture identification information that identifies a reference picture, used by the predictive image generation unit to generate a predictive image, on a per block basis.]
[ 9. The picture coding method according to claim 8, further comprising:
selecting, for coding the other plural-block image unit, a first reference picture for generating a predictive image of a first block of the other plural-block image unit, and a second reference picture for generating a predictive image of a second block of the other plural-block image unit.
wherein the describing the block-specific reference picture identification information comprises:
describing, for the first block of the other plural-block image unit, first reference picture identification information that identifies the first reference picture used to generate the predictive image of the first block; and
describing, for the second block of the other plural-block image unit, second reference picture identification information that identifies the second reference picture different from the first reference picture and used to generate the predictive image of the second block.]
