Inspire students to learn about intellectual property as they design and build their own apps
Are you a middle or high school educator interested in encouraging your students to develop mobile applications and wondering how to help them consider the intellectual property aspects of creating, branding, and protecting their creations? You can come to the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) Office of Education webinar to learn more about the 2022 Congressional App Challenge (CAC). You'll hear from Joseph Alessi, program director of the CAC, and learn how to enter this year's challenge. You'll also explore ideation concepts with the USPTO's Office of Education, to get your students thinking about how to create their own apps. #Congress4CS!
Joe Alessi is the Director of the Congressional App Challenge, a congressional initiative aimed at developing future computer science talent through a series of annual coding competitions hosted by members of Congress. The contest challenges middle and high school students from across the United States to use their knowledge and creativity to design apps that are unique to their own skills and interests. Joe is a career non-profit management professional, having worked to transform the educational initiatives of nongovernmental organizations, trade associations, and charitable foundations. Under his leadership—beginning in January 2019—the Congressional App Challenge has reached record heights, increasing congressional participation by nearly 50% while doubling student engagement.
The USPTO's Office of Education hosts a monthly professional development webinar for K-12 educators interested in integrating intellectual property (IP), innovation, and invention activities into their STEM/STEAM curriculum. Educators learn about the different types of IP, such as patents, trademarks, copyrights, and trade secrets. Sessions are held on the last Tuesday of each month from 6-7:30 p.m. ET.
