Patent application examination is divided among nine examining technology centers (TCs) and the Central Reexamination Unit (CRU). Each TC is led by an Assistant Commissioner (AC), and a group of Directors, (TC Directors) who have jurisdiction over certain assigned fields of technology: They provide leadership over the 10,000 employees of the technology centers, presiding over the implementation of processes, policies and programs created within the Patent Operations organization. The ACs also contribute to both Patent and USPTO-wide initiatives by serving on cross-organizational teams and ensuring that the needs of its stakeholders are met.
