Thanks to smartphones and social media, your students will likely know the latest headlines before they even walk into the classroom. So, what can students do with all this information? Join us as we share how current events can be a great launching point to help students use inventions to solve problems in their community.
Our guest this month is Victoria Pasquantonio, who will talk about ways you can bring out your students' inventive side to solve challenges and learn about the process of getting a patent.
Victoria Pasquantonio is the education producer for "PBS NewsHour" and the director of "PBS NewsHour Classroom," the current events website for middle and high school teachers and students. Victoria enjoys working with teachers on "PBS NewsHour Classroom" invention education curriculum, which uses the news to teach students how to recognize and solve problems at the local level. Before switching careers, Victoria taught middle and high school social studies and English for 13 years.
The United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) hosts monthly virtual professional development webinars for K-12 educators interested in integrating intellectual property (IP), innovation, and invention activities into their STEM/STEAM curriculum. Educators can learn about different types of IP, including patents, trademarks, copyrights, and trade secrets. Sessions are held on the last Tuesday of each month from 6-7:30 p.m. ET.
