The USPTO’s Patent Quality Chat webinar kicks off its 2018 series in January on “Unlocking Open Data for our Patent Customers”.
The recent release of new data in USPTO’s Open Data Portal marks the first time that comprehensive data on over 4.4 million Office actions from the last several years has been made readily available to the public. The USPTO’s Patent Application Office Actions Research Dataset contains extracted information regarding the examiners’ decisions on patentability written in “Office actions” to Applicants. Moreover, two application programming interfaces (APIs) are newly available to help users analyze and explore the data via frequently requested attributes: citations used by examiners to reject claims using prior art and particular types of rejections used by examiners, such as rejections under 35 U.S.C. 101 or 35 U.S.C. 103.
Thomas A. Beach, Chief Data Strategist, and Scott Beliveau, Branch Chief of Advanced Analytics, will be discussing how you can leverage this data for your needs, including considering affirmance rate by rejection type, citation usage, consistency of rejections being made across technologies and much more. They will also be highlighting some of the USPTO’s quality efforts using this data to improve the consistency of patent prosecution and the quality of issued patents.
