Nicholas Matich is the acting general counsel and principal legal advisor to the Under Secretary of Commerce for Intellectual Property and Director of the USPTO. Mr. Matich returned to his role at USPTO after working for several years as a partner at McKool Smith P.C. where he represented private clients in a variety of intellectual property matters.
Previously, Mr. Matich also served as the Deputy General Counsel at the Office of Management and Budget and in the White House as Special Assistant to the President and Associate Staff Secretary.
Mr. Matich started his legal career as a law clerk to Judge Richard C. Wesley of the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit.
He earned his bachelor’s degree from the University of Notre Dame and his law degree from the University of Virginia School of Law. Before attending law school, Mr. Matich served in the United States Navy as a Surface Warfare Officer.
