The Office of the Deputy Commissioner for Trademark Examination Policy supports high-quality examination by providing policy guidance for how trademark applications are examined and reviews examining attorneys' consistency with that guidance. It also supports customers by:
- Delivering customer service and outreach: Helps applicants and the public to understand trademark laws, procedures and requirements to education materials, training, and direct communication.
- Handling complex legal questions: Reviews and helps resolve difficult or unusual legal issues that arise during the trademark examination process.
- Maintaining the Trademark Manual of Examining Procedure (TMEP): Writes and updates the official manual examining attorneys use to review applications.
