World IP Day was established by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) in 2000 to "raise awareness of how patents, copyright, trademarks, and designs impact on daily life" and "to celebrate creativity, and the contribution made by creators and innovators to the development of societies across the globe." World IP Day is observed annually on April 26; the date was chosen because it coincides with the date on which the convention establishing the World Intellectual Property Organization entered into force in 1970. The theme of this year's World IP Day celebrations is: "Powering Change: Women in Innovation and Creativity."
On April 19, Texas Regional Office Regional Director Hope Shimabuku will be a speaker at a CLE luncheon that is being hosted by the Houston Intellectual Property Law Association (HIPLA) in collaboration with the Thurgood Marshall School of Law IP Law Society. The event will be held at the Thurgood Marshall School of Law at Texas Southern University. Director Shimabuku will give a presentation on the State of the United States Patent and Trademark Office followed by a brief discussion of the importance of World IP Day 2018. This luncheon is approved for 1.0 hours of Texas MCLE.
