Newcomers and novelty: The contribution of immigrant inventors to U.S. patenting, 2000-2012

This report is the first to explore the inventor citizenship information contained in U.S. patent applications. By combining it with the disambiguated inventor and location data in PatentsView the report tracks the origin countries and destination U.S. counties of immigrant inventor-patentees. The report also measures immigrants’ contribution to U.S. patenting across the dimensions of quantity, influence, and technology. One finding reveals that India was the most frequent country of origin, representing approximately 20% of all immigrant inventor-patentees during the report’s time period, while Europe was the most frequent region of origin at 26% of immigrant inventors.
